Welcome to Science

‘Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.’

My name is Jane Claire Smyth, an educator deeply rooted in both science and consciousness. At Maharishi School, education is not merely the transmission of knowledge but the cultivation of a mindset that allows students to discover their fullest potential. My journey, from decades in medical sciences and nuclear medicine to becoming a science teacher and a dedicated mother has taught me that true learning is an exploration of both the external world and the internal self. This dual focus on the material and the metaphysical shapes my approach to teaching, where passion becomes the genesis of genius.

At the core of my educational philosophy is the belief in phenomenon-based learning. Students should not simply learn about the world—they should experience it, question it, and engage with it in a way that fosters deep understanding. By providing satisfying explanations of natural phenomena and how the universe's constituents behave, I aim to nurture a sense of wonder and curiosity in my students. This approach involves breaking down complex and abstract ideas into manageable chunks through models, practical experiments, and demonstrations, making these concepts easier to conceptualise and communicate.

I am committed to expanding my students' sense of who they are and what they are capable of. I emphasise the importance of a growth mindset—understanding that obstacles are opportunities for growth and that continuous forward movement is the key to success. My personal mantra, "I can, I will, I must because I am," serves as a daily reminder to my students that their potential is limitless when fuelled by determination and purpose.

In alignment with the consciousness-based curriculum of Maharishi School, where my own child is a student, I incorporate practices that enhance students' awareness and sense of self. Daily meditation and self-reflection are integral to our approach, helping students connect with their inner selves and find a cause greater than themselves. This connection is the secret to energy, vitality, and strength; driving them to pursue their goals with passion and resilience.

Self-esteem, in my view, is not given but earned. It is cultivated through discipline, hard work, dedication, and focus. In a world where distractions are abundant, I instil in my students the belief that self-esteem is built by doing difficult things—by challenging themselves, facing their fears, and embracing the discomfort that comes with growth. I encourage them to recognise that when something scares them, that is where the work is to be done. Through this process, they not only gain knowledge but also develop the confidence and self-respect that come from overcoming challenges.

My goal as an educator is to inspire students to see beyond the immediate and the obvious, to understand that their potential is vast, and their capabilities are boundless. By fostering a deep connection between their intellect and their consciousness, I aim to guide them on a path of lifelong learning, self-discovery, and meaningful contribution to the world.
