What is Consciousness-based Education (CbE)?
At Maharishi School, we take a forward-thinking approach to education—one that helps children develop focus, confidence, and resilience alongside their academic studies. Consciousness-Based Education (CbE) is designed to help every pupil reach their full potential by giving them simple and effective tools to develop self-awareness, creativity, and emotional well-being.
A Practical Approach to Learning
CbE is based on the understanding that every child has an untapped reservoir of energy, happiness, creativity, and intelligence. However, modern life is full of distractions, and young people are often overwhelmed by external pressures—from schoolwork and social expectations to the constant noise of digital technology. If they don’t have time to pause, reflect, and recharge, they may struggle to manage these demands effectively.
At Maharishi School, we incorporate Transcendental Meditation (TM) into the daily routine, giving pupils a simple, effortless technique to calm their minds, improve concentration, and reduce stress. Younger children use an age-appropriate practice called Word of Wisdom. These few minutes of quiet time each day allow pupils to develop inner balance and clarity—helping them feel more focused, confident, and engaged in their learning.
More Than Just Meditation
CbE is not just about meditation—it’s woven into all aspects of school life. Our lessons encourage pupils to reflect on their learning, develop critical thinking skills, and see the connections between different subjects. A key principle of our approach is "knowledge is structured in consciousness"—in other words, the more students understand how they learn, the more effectively they can absorb and apply knowledge; and developing their own consciousness helps them understand and learn more effectively .
Pupils are introduced to two essential ways of thinking:
- Analysis – breaking down complex topics into smaller parts to understand them better
- Synthesis – putting those parts together to see the bigger picture
By combining these skills, pupils learn to think more clearly, make better decisions, and develop a well-rounded understanding of the world.
Building Confidence, Character, and Community
Education is not just about gaining knowledge—it’s about preparing young people to navigate life with confidence. CbE helps students develop a strong sense of self, improving their ability to focus, problem-solve, and build meaningful relationships.
Our pupils also develop a deep understanding of the connections between individuals, communities, and the wider world. Through group activities, class discussions, and reflections on family, friendship, and society, they gain a sense of responsibility and belonging. We encourage them to see their place in the world with the belief that “the world is my family.”
Preparing Pupils for the Future
The modern world is fast-paced and unpredictable. Many young people struggle with stress, anxiety, and the pressures of social media and digital distractions. Our approach ensures that pupils leave Maharishi School with the tools they need to stay balanced, resilient, and ready for whatever challenges they face.
At its heart, CbE is about real-world success. Whether in school, work, or life, our pupils develop the skills, mindset, and self-belief to achieve their goals and contribute positively to the world around them.
