Year 5

Hi, I’m Hayley Copplestone the Deputy Head of the Primary school and Year 5 teacher.

During the Year 5 school year, we explore a range of interesting and engaging topics. As part of our English curriculum, we read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. This book inspires several genres of writing, including, writing a Wizard’s letter from Hogwarts, creating a Hogwarts school prospectus, developing our descriptive and creative writing by creating our own wizards and writing our own Hogwarts ghost stories. Our history topic Victorian Britain also inspire lots of writing, including, a recount of our school trip and writing a diary. We also take part in weekly comprehension, guided reading and handwriting lessons.

As part of our history topics we will also travel back in time to investigate the Ancient Civilisation of the Indus Valley and Ancient Greece. In our geography lessons we explore our current world, thinking of and discussing innovative ways to Reduce, Re-use and Recycle. We also explore earth matters, including, the water cycle and mountains.

Our class participates in different workshops throughout the year including a cultural day, where we immerse ourselves in a culture that is different to our own. We also have an exciting trip to Quarry Bank Mill to enhance our learning about Victorian Britain.

I would be delighted to meet you to answer any further questions about Year 5 and invite you to come and have a look at our wonderful classroom.
