Our Year 3 class have been researching deforestation as part of their topic on Rainforests. Here are some steps that Year 3 would like our whole school community to work towards to lessen our impact on our environment and reduce deforestation:
1 Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. If we recycle the products that come from trees such as paper, then we can use them over and over again. There will be a lower demand for products made from trees.
2 Turn all switches off at the wall overnight in your home/workplace and turn lights off at all times when not in use.
3 Minimise use of paper – don’t print extra copies just in case, provide electronic copies when possible instead of paper.
4 Reduce meat consumption (the single biggest cause of deforestation is cutting trees down to make room for animals that we eat for meat).
5 Buy from companies that are environmentally friendly. They don’t ruin our environment just to make money.
6 Try not to buy newspapers or magazines. Read them online.
7 Buy furniture and wood that is Certified. This means that the wood was legally cut down.
During our research, one of the children in Year 3 came across a website that is exceptional at highlighting the negative impact humans are having on our beautiful planet in various ways. The children would like you to please look at this website, here is the link: http://www.theworldcounts.com/ This website has a section on deforestation facts for children (here is the link http://www.theworldcounts.com/…/Deforestation-Facts-for-Kids).
